How Winter Break Affects College Towns

A location doesn’t get to call itself a “college town” merely by having a university within its city limits. Rather, a real college town is a place where the academic institution is a distinctive feature of the city culture. College towns are distinctive from big cities because of the energy and veneration of the institution throughout the community. While metropolitan areas often offer some of the same benefits as college towns, universities and colleges can be located in otherwise overlooked areas of the country that wouldn’t get those same opportunities otherwise. This is why a winter break is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle students bring. Here’s why.

A Good Rest Period

Higher education students have a lot of energy. That youthful vitality very often has them terribly active, utilizing parks, athletic centers, and partaking in entertainment such as cinemas and local parades or festivals. 2020’s COVID-19 of course makes that a bit more precarious, but students made the most of it. Typically, with many of them gone, parks employees have a chance to clean up and prepare for a spring return, and cinemas can update their facilities and fitness centers can repair their equipment. These often-used venues get a nice breather to and get ready to accommodate the students when the return, which satisfies everyone.

Restaurants

Young people love to eat, and restaurant owners love to feed them. They get loaded with business during the school year, and that can be quite a strain on resources. With a typical year, students on break means restaurants are a bit slower, giving them more time to do deep cleans and stock up on inventory. Delivery food service has a change to prepare as well; companies like Door Dash can take stock and analyze what worked for them the previous months and tackle the spring rush with better informed plans that will maximize business and profits.

Transit Service

Students use public and university transportation quite a bit. Those services will see a drastic reduction in business, though, as with other businesses, this allows for time to clean, repair, and service each vehicle so that it performs at optimum levels when the students return.
